Anyone who takes the escalator up to the exhibition level at phaeno is immersed in a world of experiments. Between curved mirrors, gigantic marble runs and talking robots, it is often impossible to decide which area to visit first. And that’s just a small part of the wide-ranging topics covered in the experiments. From small mechanisms to a spectacular fire tornado, there is something fascinating for everyone.
The phaeno Science Centre comprises an extensive, interactive exhibition all about natural science. The permanent elements of the exhibition include, for example, experiments on cell biology, such as microscope specimens of various creatures, or on the senses, such as a labyrinth in the dark or a crooked house. One highlight is the aforementioned indoor fire tornado, in which paraffin is ignited and then pulled six metres into the air in a vortex. The exhibition is based on interaction and hands-on experience and is therefore particularly exciting for children.
The phaeno building is a work of art in itself, designed by architect Zaha Hadid. It consists of self-compacting concrete and glass façades and both the interior levels and the exterior surfaces of the building are modelled on various landscape formations such as hills, craters or plateaus.
In addition to the exhibition, the phaeno organises a science talk on relevant future topics about once a month. These talks are free of charge and are also streamed live.
The phaeno is located right next to Wolfsburg’s main railway station and there is an underground car park for cars.
